TurboTax Error Codes — What Every Code Means and What to Do First
Seeing a TurboTax error code and not sure what it means or where to start? This independent reference guide covers every major category of TurboTax error — IRS e-file rejection codes, state rejection codes, software and installation errors, import failures, and update errors — with plain-language explanations and a documented first step for each one.
TurboTax errors fall into two completely different categories that require different approaches. IRS and state e-file rejection codes — such as IND-031-04, R0000-500-01, or FW2-502 — mean the IRS or your state tax authority received your return and rejected it for a specific, identifiable reason. These are the most common and are almost always fixable by correcting specific data in your return and refiling. TurboTax software errors — such as Error 36, Error 65535, or Failed Validation Error 54 — mean TurboTax itself has encountered a problem during installation, update, or transmission. To find your rejection code in TurboTax Online, sign in and select Fix my return — the code appears on the screen that explains what needs to be corrected. For Desktop, the rejection code appears in the email TurboTax sends after a failed transmission. The most important first step for any e-file rejection is to locate the exact code — because the code tells you precisely what the IRS is objecting to and what field needs to change.
IRS Rejection Codes vs TurboTax Software Errors — Why the Difference Matters
Before working through any TurboTax error, it is essential to identify which of two fundamentally different categories your error belongs to — because the cause, the fix, and the urgency are completely different.
IRS and State E-File Rejection Codes
What they are
Codes generated by the IRS or your state tax authority after your return has been transmitted and received. The IRS or state ran your return through their validation system and found a specific problem.
What they look like
IND-031-04, IND-032-04, R0000-500-01, FW2-502, F8962-070, F1040-525-03, W2_Import_Hold
What they mean
Something specific in your return does not match the IRS or state database. Almost always fixable. The code tells you exactly what to correct.
What to do
Sign into TurboTax and select Fix my return. TurboTax will display the rejection code and guide you to the specific screen that needs correction. Fix the identified issue and resubmit.
TurboTax Software Errors
What they are
Error codes generated by TurboTax itself — during installation, during software updates, during file opening, or during e-file transmission. These have nothing to do with the IRS reviewing your return.
What they look like
Error 36, Error 65535, Error 42015, Error 1921, Failed Validation Error 54, Error 102345
What they mean
TurboTax's software has encountered a problem — corrupted installation files, outdated version, Windows permission issue, internet connectivity problem, or antivirus conflict.
What to do
Update TurboTax first. Restart your computer. If the error persists, reinstall TurboTax from the official TurboTax website. Run TurboTax as Administrator if on Windows.
You have 20 days to refile after a rejection
After an IRS e-file rejection, TurboTax gives you a fixed window to correct and resubmit your return before the filing deadline becomes an issue. If you received a rejection near the tax deadline, file for an extension immediately using Form 4868 — this gives you until October to correct and refile without late filing penalties. Extension to file is not an extension to pay — if you owe tax, pay an estimate by the original deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
Software errors do not mean your tax data is lost
A TurboTax software error — including a failed transmission — does not mean your tax return data has been lost or deleted. Your .tax file or your Online return data is separate from the transmission attempt. Even if TurboTax crashes or fails to update, your return data is preserved.
After multiple rejections — print and mail
If your return continues to be rejected after following the documented resolution steps — particularly for identity-related rejections where your information is correct but the IRS continues to reject it — printing and mailing your return is always available as an option. A mailed return cannot be rejected the way an e-filed return can. The trade-off is a longer processing time for any refund.
Identity and Social Security Number Rejection Codes — IND and R0000 Series
Identity rejections are the most common category of IRS e-file rejection. They occur when the name, Social Security number, date of birth, or other identifying information in your return does not match what the IRS has on file from the Social Security Administration. These almost always result from data entry errors rather than actual problems with your identity.
IND-031-04 — Prior Year AGI Does Not Match — Primary Taxpayer
Very Common — Most Widely Reported Rejection CodeWhat it means
The Adjusted Gross Income you entered from last year's return to electronically sign your 2025 return does not match the AGI the IRS has on record for you for 2024. The IRS uses this as an identity verification step for e-filing — it confirms that the person filing this return also filed last year's return. The mismatch triggers a rejection even though nothing else in your return is wrong.
Common causes
You filed an amended return after your original 2024 return — the IRS holds your amended AGI, not the original. You filed your 2024 return on paper — paper returns can take months to process and your AGI may not yet be in the IRS's electronic system. You entered the AGI with cents — only enter the whole dollar amount, no decimals. You are using the wrong line from your 2024 return — AGI is on Line 11 of Form 1040.
Pull your 2024 Form 1040 and locate Line 11. Enter that exact number in TurboTax with no cents and no commas. If you filed an amended return, use the AGI from the amended Form 1040-X. If you filed on paper and the IRS has not yet processed your return, enter 0 as your prior year AGI — this is the IRS-documented workaround for this specific situation and it allows your return to be accepted.
IND-032-04 — Prior Year AGI Does Not Match — Spouse
Very CommonWhat it means
The same as IND-031-04 but applies to the spouse listed on a Married Filing Jointly return. The spouse's prior year AGI entered in TurboTax does not match the IRS's record for the spouse's 2024 AGI.
Specific note for 2026: If the spouse listed on your joint return passed away in 2025, enter their AGI from their final individual return filed for 2024 — if they filed jointly in 2024, both spouses share the same AGI on Line 11. Use that figure for both IND-031-04 and IND-032-04 fields.
Same process as IND-031-04 — locate Line 11 of the 2024 jointly filed Form 1040. Enter that figure for both the primary and spouse AGI fields in TurboTax.
R0000-500-01 — Name or SSN Mismatch — Primary Taxpayer
CommonWhat it means
The name or Social Security number of the first person listed on the return does not match the IRS database. The IRS pulls its name and SSN records from the Social Security Administration. Common causes include a recent legal name change — marriage, divorce, or court order — that the SSA has not yet updated in their system, a typo in the SSN or name in TurboTax, or a hyphenated or multi-word name entered differently than what the SSA has on file.
Retrieve your Social Security card and enter your name and SSN exactly as they appear on the card — including any hyphens, suffixes, or middle initials. If you recently changed your name and have not updated your SSA record, you have two options: use your previous name that matches SSA records, or print and mail your return since mailed returns are not subject to this electronic validation.
R0000-500-02 — Name or SSN Mismatch — Spouse
CommonWhat it means
The same as R0000-500-01 but applies to the spouse on a Married Filing Jointly return. Particularly common when a spouse has recently changed their name due to marriage or divorce and has not yet updated the Social Security Administration.
Same as R0000-500-01 — use the name exactly as it appears on the spouse's Social Security card. If the name was recently changed and SSA records have not been updated, use the previous name that matches SSA records.
IND-524 — Date of Birth Does Not Match — Primary Taxpayer
CommonWhat it means
The date of birth entered for the primary taxpayer in TurboTax does not match the IRS database. The IRS pulls date of birth from Social Security Administration records. Common causes include a typo in the date of birth, entering the date in the wrong format — TurboTax requires MM/DD/YYYY — or a genuine discrepancy between what the taxpayer believes their date of birth to be and what the SSA has on file.
Find an official document — birth certificate, passport, or driver's licence — and enter the date exactly as it appears, in MM/DD/YYYY format. If the date entered matches your official documents but the rejection persists, the SSA may have an incorrect date of birth on file for you. Contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to verify and correct their records. While waiting for the SSA update, print and mail your return.
F1040-525-03 — Date of Birth Does Not Match — Primary Taxpayer
CommonWhat it means
Functionally the same as IND-524 — the date of birth for the first person listed does not match IRS records. The F1040 prefix indicates this is a form-level validation rule rather than an individual data point validation.
Same as IND-524. If the date is correct on your official documents and the rejection persists after correction, mail your return.
Dependent and Child Credit Rejection Codes
Dependent-related rejections occur when the SSN, name, or date of birth of a dependent on your return does not match IRS records, or when the same dependent has been claimed on another return already filed. These can be among the most stressful rejections because they sometimes indicate identity theft.
IND-040 — Dependent SSN Already Claimed on Another Return
Common — Can Indicate Identity TheftWhat it means
The Social Security Number listed for a dependent on your return has already been used as a dependent SSN on a different tax return that was accepted by the IRS before yours. This happens for legitimate reasons — a divorced or separated couple where both parents attempt to claim the same child — and for illegitimate reasons — someone has filed a fraudulent return using your dependent's SSN.
If you have the legal right to claim this dependent — confirmed by a divorce decree, custody agreement, or IRS tiebreaker rules — you cannot e-file. Print your return and mail it. Attach documentation confirming your right to claim the dependent. The IRS will process both returns and investigate. If you believe identity theft is involved, contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit and file IRS Form 14039 — Identity Theft Affidavit.
IND-041 — Spouse SSN Already Used as Dependent
Less CommonWhat it means
The Social Security Number you entered for your spouse on a Married Filing Jointly return has already been used on another return — either as a primary taxpayer or as a dependent. Can happen when a spouse filed their own return before a joint return was prepared, when a spouse is claimed as a dependent on a parent's return in error, or in identity theft situations.
Verify that your spouse has not already filed a separate return. If they have, you cannot file jointly for this tax year after they have already filed separately. Contact the IRS if neither you nor your spouse filed another return using that SSN.
R0000-194 — Prior Year PIN Mismatch
ModerateWhat it means
You used a self-select PIN to e-sign your return and the PIN does not match what the IRS expects based on your prior year filing. The self-select PIN is an alternative to entering your prior year AGI — you create a five-digit PIN of your choice — but TurboTax also requires verification against prior year data.
In TurboTax, switch from the self-select PIN method to using your prior year AGI as your identity verification. The AGI method is more reliable and less prone to mismatch. Find your prior year AGI on Line 11 of your 2024 Form 1040 and enter it.
Form and Schedule Rejection Codes — IRS Validation Failures on Specific Forms
Form-specific rejections occur when a particular tax form or schedule in your return fails the IRS's validation rules — a required field is missing, a figure is inconsistent with another part of the return, or a form is missing that the IRS expected based on other data in your return.
F8962-070 — Missing Form 1095-A — Health Insurance Marketplace
Common — Affects Marketplace Insurance PurchasersWhat it means
Your return was rejected because Form 1095-A — the Health Insurance Marketplace Statement — is missing from your return. The IRS receives 1095-A data directly from healthcare marketplaces and its records show that you or someone on your return had Marketplace coverage in 2025. When 1095-A data is in the IRS's system but not on your return, the IRS rejects the return.
Do not file or refile until you have your Form 1095-A. Download it from HealthCare.gov, from your state Marketplace's website, or request it through your IRS account at IRS.gov. Then in TurboTax, go to the health insurance section, answer yes to whether you received a 1095-A, and enter all three columns from the form accurately. Form 1095-A is typically available from mid-January through mid-February for the prior tax year.
F1040-478 — IRA Distribution or Rollover Flag
Moderate — Increased in 2026What it means
Your return was rejected because TurboTax flagged a discrepancy in how an IRA distribution or rollover was reported. Specifically, the IRADistributionRolloverInd field on your return conflicts with other data — typically when a 1099-R was imported and Box 4c was incorrectly checked or left unchecked. This was a widely reported rejection in the 2025-2026 filing season following a TurboTax update in March 2026 that changed how existing 1099-Rs were handled.
Delete the affected 1099-R from your return entirely. Do not edit it — delete it. Re-add the 1099-R by entering all information manually from your physical form, paying particular attention to Box 4c. Verify the rollover indicator matches whether the distribution was a direct rollover, indirect rollover, or taxable distribution.
F8879-IRS-0001 — E-Signature Not Complete
CommonWhat it means
Your return was transmitted without a completed e-signature or the e-signature data did not transmit correctly. This often happens when TurboTax's transmission was interrupted partway through the filing process — the return left your computer but the signature component did not complete on TurboTax's servers.
Sign back into TurboTax and go through the File section again. Complete the e-signature step in full — including agreeing to the declaration — and resubmit. Do not reopen and edit your return data before resubmitting.
F1040-358 — Missing or Incorrect IP PIN
Moderate — Increasing as More Users Register for IP PINWhat it means
The IRS has an Identity Protection PIN on file for the primary taxpayer but the IP PIN was not entered on the return, or the IP PIN entered does not match the IRS's record. Since 2021, the IRS has allowed all taxpayers to opt in to the IP PIN programme — any taxpayer who registered for an IP PIN must enter it each year or their return will be rejected.
If you opted into the IRS IP PIN programme, retrieve your current year IP PIN from your IRS Online Account at IRS.gov. Your IP PIN changes every year — the prior year IP PIN will not work. Enter the current IP PIN in TurboTax under the Security section before refiling. If you believe you enrolled but cannot locate your PIN, visit IRS.gov to retrieve it — the IRS will not provide it by phone.
F2441-054 — Dependent Care Provider Information Mismatch
ModerateWhat it means
The Employer Identification Number or SSN of a dependent care provider entered on Form 2441 — Childcare and Dependent Care Expenses — does not match IRS records. The IRS validates daycare centre EINs and individual caregiver SSNs against their employer and taxpayer databases.
Confirm the EIN or SSN of your dependent care provider. For daycare centres, the EIN is available on receipts, contracts, or by contacting the centre directly. For individual caregivers, their SSN must be used. Enter the EIN or SSN exactly as provided — nine digits, correct hyphen placement. If the provider refuses to provide their tax identification number, enter the provider's information but note in TurboTax that the provider declined to provide an ID number — TurboTax has a specific field for this situation.
R0000-906-02 — Invalid Bank Routing or Account Number
Common — Affects Users Choosing Direct DepositWhat it means
The bank routing number or account number entered for your refund direct deposit or tax payment does not match a valid format in the IRS's banking validation system. A valid routing number is exactly nine digits, and the first two digits must be 01 through 12 or 21 through 32. Account numbers must match the format of your specific bank.
Check a physical check from the relevant account — the routing number is the nine-digit number in the bottom left corner, the account number is the middle series of numbers. Do not rely on memory or online banking display — find a physical check. Enter both numbers exactly as they appear. If you closed the account since filing, the IRS will mail a paper check to your address on the return.
State E-File Rejection Codes — When Your State Rejects After Federal Is Accepted
State e-file rejections occur independently from federal rejections. Your federal return may be accepted by the IRS while your state return is rejected — or vice versa. State rejection codes vary by state but follow similar patterns to IRS codes. Here are the most common state rejection scenarios.
State AGI Mismatch — State Return Rejected After Federal Accepted
CommonWhat it means
Your state return was rejected because the AGI figure on the state return does not match what the state tax authority expects based on your federal AGI. Some states independently validate AGI against federal data. This can occur when TurboTax transferred an incorrect AGI from the federal return to the state return, or when a late federal amendment was made that did not carry through to the state return.
In TurboTax, review your state return and verify the AGI shown matches Line 11 of your 2025 federal Form 1040. If they do not match, the state return may have been generated before you made a late change to the federal return. Delete the state return and regenerate it after your federal return is finalised and locked.
State Rejection — Federal Changes Not Transferred
CommonWhat it means
You made changes to your federal return after starting or completing your state return. The state return was not updated with the federal changes and now contains inconsistent data that the state's validation system rejects.
Delete the state return entirely in TurboTax — not just clear it, but delete it. Then regenerate it fresh from your finalised federal return. TurboTax will pull the updated federal data and populate the state return correctly. Any state-specific entries — state-only deductions, credits, or additions — will need to be re-entered after the state return is regenerated.
State Rejection — W2_Import_Hold — State Wage Mismatch
Common in 2025-2026 — See Section 5 AboveFull details for W2_Import_Hold are in Section 5. The resolution — delete and manually re-enter the affected W-2 — applies to state rejections as well as federal.
State Rejection — Missing Schedule or Supporting Form
ModerateWhat it means
Your state return references a deduction, credit, or situation that requires a state-specific schedule or form that is not attached. Some states require state-specific forms for situations that are handled on federal schedules — for example, depreciation adjustments, state-specific credits, or additions to income.
Review the rejection code from your state tax authority — state codes are often formatted differently from IRS codes and may refer to specific state form numbers. In TurboTax, confirm that all state-specific sections are complete. If TurboTax shows a state-specific form as required, complete it before refiling. Some state forms are not finalised until several weeks after the filing season opens — if your form is listed as not yet available, you cannot file electronically for that state until TurboTax updates to include the finalised form.
TurboTax Software Errors — Installation, Update, and Programme Failures
TurboTax software errors are generated by TurboTax itself — not by the IRS. They occur during installation, software updates, file opening, or e-file transmission. These errors do not mean your tax data is lost or that the IRS has seen a problem with your return. They indicate that TurboTax's software has encountered a local problem on your computer.
Error 36 — Installation Failure Due to Corrupted System Files
ModerateWhat it means
TurboTax's installation process encountered corrupted system files that prevent the software from installing or updating correctly. Usually caused by a previous incomplete installation attempt that left corrupted files, by antivirus software interfering with the installation process, or by insufficient Windows permissions for the installation folder.
Completely uninstall any existing TurboTax installation through Windows Programs and Features. Restart your computer. Download a fresh copy of TurboTax from the official TurboTax website — do not reuse a previously downloaded installer that may itself be corrupted. Run the new installer by right-clicking and selecting Run as Administrator. Temporarily disable antivirus during installation.
Error 65535 — Software Downloaded from Unofficial Source
ModerateWhat it means
TurboTax has detected that the software was downloaded from a source other than TurboTax's official website or authorised retailers. When TurboTax is downloaded from third-party sites, installation files can be corrupted, modified, or incomplete — Error 65535 indicates a corrupted or modified installation file.
Uninstall the current TurboTax installation completely. Download TurboTax directly and only from turbotax.intuit.com. If you purchased from a physical retailer such as Costco or Walmart, the CD or download card contains a code to access the official download — use that code at turbotax.intuit.com rather than using any executable file from a third-party source.
Error 42015 — Corrupted Installation File After System Malfunction
ModerateWhat it means
TurboTax encountered a corrupted installation file, usually following a computer crash, power failure, or other system malfunction that interrupted a previous installation or update. The software cannot run correctly because essential files were written incompletely.
Update Windows to the latest version first — this repairs Windows components that TurboTax depends on. Then uninstall TurboTax completely, restart, and reinstall from the official website. Running Windows System File Checker — command: sfc /scannow in an elevated Command Prompt — before reinstalling TurboTax addresses underlying system file corruption that caused the error.
Error 1921 — Incomplete Installation or Deleted Programme Files
Less CommonWhat it means
TurboTax's installation is incomplete — some programme files were deleted, either by antivirus software flagging them incorrectly, by a manual deletion, or by an interrupted installation process. TurboTax cannot run correctly because required files are missing.
Check your antivirus quarantine folder — antivirus software occasionally quarantines TurboTax executable files incorrectly. If files are in quarantine, restore them and add TurboTax's installation folder to your antivirus exclusion list. If files were deleted manually, reinstall TurboTax from the official website.
Error 102345 — Non-Tax File Opened in TurboTax
MinorWhat it means
TurboTax attempted to open a file that is not a valid TurboTax tax file. This happens when TurboTax has been set as the default application for a file type it cannot handle, or when a user accidentally attempts to open a PDF, Word document, or other file type through TurboTax.
Ensure you are opening a file with a .tax, .tax2024, .tax2025, or similar TurboTax-specific extension. TurboTax cannot open PDF versions of your return, prior year returns from different software, or any non-TurboTax file type. If you are trying to import prior year data from a different tax software, use TurboTax's import function specifically — not the File Open function.
Error 54 — Failed Validation — TurboTax Version Outdated
Common — Appears Near Filing DeadlinesWhat it means
Your TurboTax Desktop version is too outdated to transmit returns to the IRS and requires an update before e-filing is possible. This error appears specifically during the e-file transmission attempt — not during return preparation. The IRS and state e-file systems require current software versions that include the most recent validation rules. If TurboTax Desktop has not been updated to the current release, it cannot transmit returns.
In TurboTax Desktop, go to Online → Check for Updates. Install all available updates. After updating, restart TurboTax and attempt the e-file transmission again. If the update process itself fails, see the Update Errors section below.
TurboTax Import Failures and Data Entry Errors
Import errors prevent TurboTax from automatically pulling your W-2, 1099, investment data, or prior year return into your current return. These are software navigation problems — not IRS rejections — and they do not affect your filing status. In most cases, the resolution is to enter the data manually.
W-2 Direct Import Not Finding Employer
Very CommonWhat it means
TurboTax cannot locate your employer in its direct import partner network. Not all employers participate in TurboTax's direct W-2 import programme. The absence of your employer from the import list does not indicate a problem with your W-2, your employer, or your TurboTax account — it simply means your employer has not partnered with TurboTax for direct W-2 delivery.
Select the option to enter your W-2 manually. Enter all information from your physical W-2 form exactly as printed — Box by Box — paying particular attention to Box b (EIN), Box 1 (Wages), Box 2 (Federal Income Tax Withheld), and Boxes 12, 15, 16, and 17. Do not attempt repeated import searches if the employer is genuinely not in the import network — manual entry produces identical results.
1099 Brokerage Import Failed or Returning Incomplete Data
Common — Particularly for Brokerage 1099-B DataWhat it means
TurboTax's import connection to your brokerage or financial institution failed, returned an incomplete dataset, or imported data that does not match your paper 1099 form. For brokerage 1099-B data specifically — stock sales, dividends, and capital gains — TurboTax has partnerships with major institutions including Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard, and TD Ameritrade. Import from these institutions typically becomes available from mid-February onward when institutions finalise their 1099s.
Confirm that your 1099 documents are marked as finalised in your brokerage's online account — many brokerages issue 1099s in stages and early-imported versions may be incomplete. Ensure your brokerage login credentials are current. If import is failing or returning incorrect data, delete the imported 1099 data and enter it manually from your paper or PDF 1099 form.
Prior Year Return Import Failure — Online Return Into New Year
CommonWhat it means
When you sign into TurboTax Online for a new tax year, TurboTax should automatically offer to import your prior year Online return. If this import fails, it is usually because the prior year return was filed under a different Intuit account email address, the prior year return was filed using TurboTax Desktop rather than Online, or the prior year return has not yet been finalised and accepted.
Confirm you are signed into the same Intuit account email address you used last year. If you used a different email, sign out and sign back in with last year's email address. If you used TurboTax Desktop last year, the .tax file cannot be imported into Online — see the Desktop to Online section. If the import is offered but failing, try clicking to import your return data again from the initial setup screen before entering any new data.
Prior Year TurboTax Desktop File Cannot Import Into Online
Very Common — Desktop to Online SwitchersWhat it means
You previously used TurboTax Desktop and are now using TurboTax Online. TurboTax Desktop creates .tax files stored on your computer. TurboTax Online cannot import .tax files — this is a fundamental architecture incompatibility, not a bug or a fixable error.
What to do manually — key carry-forward figures: TurboTax Online needs specific prior year data to populate your current return correctly. The most important figures to locate from your prior year Desktop return and enter manually are:
- Line 11 of Form 1040 — Adjusted Gross Income (used for e-file identity verification)
- Any capital loss carryover from Schedule D (carries forward to offset future gains)
- Any net operating loss carryover (carries forward for business loss situations)
- Prior year basis for any assets you are still holding
- Depreciation figures for any rental property or business assets
- IRA basis from Form 8606 if you have made non-deductible IRA contributions
Open your prior year TurboTax Desktop return. Print the complete return as a PDF — go to File → Print → Print Complete Return. Use this PDF as a reference to find and manually enter the carry-forward figures listed above into TurboTax Online.
Crypto Transaction Volume Error — TurboTax Online Limit
Common for Active Crypto TradersWhat it means
TurboTax Online limits the number of individual cryptocurrency transactions that can be uploaded or entered directly. Active traders with hundreds or thousands of individual transactions from multiple exchanges frequently encounter a practical barrier where TurboTax cannot process the full transaction volume.
Use a dedicated cryptocurrency tax calculator — CoinTracker, Koinly, TaxBit, or CoinLedger — to aggregate your transactions and generate a single aggregated summary or a 1099-B equivalent file. TurboTax accepts CSV imports from several of these platforms. Import the aggregated summary rather than individual transactions. For complex DeFi situations — staking rewards, liquidity pools, wrapped tokens — the tax treatment of these transactions is a tax question requiring a CPA, not a software navigation question.
TurboTax Update Failures and E-File Transmission Errors
Update errors prevent TurboTax Desktop from downloading and installing programme updates required for current-season e-filing. Transmission errors occur when TurboTax has an issue sending your completed return to the IRS or state — separate from IRS rejection, which happens after the return is received.
TurboTax Update Not Working — General
Common — Peaks During Filing SeasonWhat it means
TurboTax Desktop cannot download or install updates from Intuit's servers. Causes include an unstable internet connection during the download, antivirus or firewall software blocking TurboTax's update server connections, a corrupted update cache on your computer, or Intuit's update servers experiencing high demand during peak filing season.
Check your internet connection stability. Temporarily disable antivirus and VPN and retry the update. If automatic updates fail, go to Online → Check for Updates and manually trigger the update. If the automatic update continues to fail, download and install a manual update patch directly from Intuit's website — search for TurboTax manual update for your specific version year.
Failed Validation Error 54 — TurboTax Version Outdated Before Filing
Already CoveredAlready covered in Software Errors section above — see Error 54.
E-File Transmission Failed — Generic Transmission Error
ModerateWhat it means
TurboTax attempted to transmit your return but the transmission did not complete successfully. This is different from an IRS rejection — the return never reached the IRS in a rejection scenario, whereas a transmission failure means TurboTax could not send the return at all. Common causes include an unstable internet connection during submission, antivirus or firewall blocking TurboTax's outbound transmission, TurboTax's servers experiencing high demand near a filing deadline, or an outdated TurboTax version that cannot connect to the current e-file system.
Check that TurboTax is fully updated. Temporarily disable antivirus and VPN. Ensure your internet connection is stable — TurboTax's transmission can fail if the connection drops during the multi-step submission process. Try transmitting at a different time of day — peak demand near filing deadlines slows TurboTax's servers. If the transmission continues to fail, print your return and mail it — your return data is safe regardless of transmission errors.
TurboTax Updates Not Working on Mac
ModerateWhat it means
TurboTax Desktop for Mac has update connectivity issues — the software reports no updates available when updates exist, or updates download but fail to install. Mac-specific causes include macOS security settings requiring explicit user permission for software updates, incompatibility between the current macOS version and the TurboTax update mechanism, or TurboTax's Gatekeeper verification failing on Apple Silicon Macs.
Go to System Preferences → Security and Privacy → General. Check whether macOS has blocked a TurboTax update from running and click Open Anyway if prompted. Right-click TurboTax and select Open to bypass Gatekeeper on the first launch after an update. If updates consistently fail, download the full TurboTax installer for Mac from the official website and perform a clean reinstallation.
Frequently Asked Questions — TurboTax Error Codes
A: IND-031-04 — prior year AGI mismatch for the primary taxpayer — is consistently the most widely reported IRS e-file rejection code for TurboTax users. It occurs when the prior year Adjusted Gross Income entered to e-sign the return does not match the IRS’s record of last year’s AGI. The fix is to locate Line 11 of your prior year Form 1040 and enter that exact figure without cents. If you filed on paper last year and the IRS has not yet processed your return electronically, enter 0 as your prior year AGI — this is the IRS-documented workaround for that specific situation.
A: For TurboTax Online — sign in to your account and select Fix my return on the home screen. The rejection code appears on the first screen alongside a brief description of what needs to be corrected. For TurboTax Desktop — check the email TurboTax sent you immediately after the failed transmission. The rejection code and a brief explanation are included in that email. You can also view it in TurboTax by going to the File section and selecting View Filing Instructions.
A: State and federal returns are processed independently. A federal acceptance does not guarantee state acceptance. The most common state rejection in 2025-2026 has been W2_Import_Hold — a data mismatch in the state wage fields of an auto-imported W-2. The resolution is to delete the affected W-2 in TurboTax and re-enter it manually from your physical W-2 form, then resubmit the state return. Other state rejections follow similar patterns to IRS rejections — review the specific state rejection code and address the identified field before resubmitting.
A: IND-031-04 means the prior year Adjusted Gross Income you entered to verify your identity for e-filing does not match what the IRS has on record for you from last year’s return. Pull your prior year Form 1040 and find Line 11 — this is your AGI. Enter that exact number in TurboTax with no cents included. If you filed an amended return, use the AGI from the amended return. If you filed on paper last year and the IRS has not processed it electronically, enter the number 0 — zero — as your prior year AGI. This is the IRS-recommended workaround for paper filers.
A: W2_Import_Hold is a state e-file rejection code that appears when TurboTax auto-imported your W-2 but the state wage and withholding data in the imported W-2 contains a discrepancy that the state’s validation system rejects. It was widely reported in the 2025-2026 filing season and the confirmed resolution is to delete the imported W-2 from TurboTax entirely — not just edit it — and re-enter it manually from your physical W-2 form, paying particular attention to the state-specific fields in Boxes 15, 16, and 17.
A: First check your internet connection stability and temporarily disable your antivirus and VPN. Go to Online → Check for Updates in TurboTax and try again. If automatic updates continue to fail, download and install a manual update patch from TurboTax’s website — search for TurboTax manual update alongside your version year. If updates still fail after the manual patch, uninstall TurboTax completely and reinstall from the official TurboTax website using a fresh download.
A: Yes. If your return continues to be rejected after following the documented resolution steps, you can always print your return and mail it to the IRS and your state tax authority. A paper return cannot be rejected the way an e-filed return can. The trade-off is a longer processing time — typically six to eight weeks for mailed returns versus three weeks for e-filed accepted returns. If you are mailing near a tax deadline, use certified mail with a return receipt so you have documentation of the filing date.
A: Error 54 — also shown as Failed Validation Error 54 — means your TurboTax Desktop version is outdated and cannot transmit returns to the IRS’s current e-file system. It appears during the transmission attempt, not during return preparation. The resolution is to go to Online → Check for Updates in TurboTax, install all available updates, restart TurboTax, and attempt to e-file again. If updates fail, download the manual update from TurboTax’s official website for your version year.
A: You can resubmit as many times as needed — there is no limit on resubmission attempts for IRS e-file rejections as long as you are within the filing deadline period. Each resubmission is a fresh attempt. If you have tried the correct prior year AGI and 0 and are still being rejected, and you have verified that your other identifying information is correct, print your return and mail it. The AGI identity check is an e-file-only requirement — mailed returns are not subject to prior year AGI verification.
